Explore safely and legally
Locations are shared by the community. Being on the map does not mean a place is legal, safe or open to visit. You are responsible for checking local laws and getting permission where needed.
- Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints. Don't damage, tag or take anything.
- Never break in. If the only way inside is forcing a door or window, walk away.
- Go with someone and tell another person where you are going.
- Watch out for rotten floors, asbestos, broken glass and unstable structures. Bring a torch, gloves and good shoes.
- Respect security, owners and neighbours. Leave if you are asked to.
- Don't share exact locations of fragile spots publicly. Use private lists for those.
Frequently asked questions
What is urbex?
+
Urbex is short for urban exploration: visiting abandoned or forgotten man-made places like old factories, hospitals, schools, houses, tunnels and military sites, usually to photograph them and learn their history.
Is urbex.today free?
+
Yes. You can browse the map without an account. A free account lets you see 60% of all locations, add your own spots, write reviews and make up to 10 lists. Pro is optional and unlocks every location, more photos, unlimited lists and GPX/KML export.
How do I find abandoned places near me?
+
Open the map and zoom into your area, or search for a town, place name or tag. Pins are colored by how hard each spot is to get into, so you can quickly pick out the easier ones.
What does access difficulty mean?
+
Every review rates how easy it was to get in. Those ratings are averaged into Easy, Medium or Hard. Spots without reviews yet show as Unknown.
Is urban exploration legal?
+
It depends on the country and the spot. Entering private property without permission is trespassing in most places. urbex.today does not give permission to enter any location. Always check the local laws, ask the owner when you can, and never break in.
Can I keep my spots private?
+
Yes. Locations and lists can be private so only you see them, or public so the community can find them. Public locations are checked by moderators before they appear on the map.
Is there an app?
+
urbex.today works in any browser on phone or desktop. On your phone you can add it to your home screen and it opens full screen like a normal app.
